Migrants from Alabama and Georgia came to Florida around 1835, and by 1840, most of them had moved south to build their homes on land made available through an Indian reservation treaty with the U.S. government in 1833. The area that became North Palm Beach was created solely for development outside Monroe County (which includes Jacksonville) because there was not enough water flowing into Lake Okeechobee at this time which provided fresh water for people living inland beyond Miami or Fort Lauderdale; instead saltwater would come up riverways such as Biscayne Bay.
