Melbourne is a scenic city situated in Florida’s very core within Brevard County’s jurisdiction. This picturesque waterfront community flaunts a visually appealing scenery, balmy climate and natural beauty that welcomes everyone to enjoy. A 2018 demographic survey of the region showed that the area’s population was approximately 83,000 residents. Melbourne is the county’s most populated metropolis and second largest city. Given this fact, it is no surprise that Melbourne, FL, is a Palm Bay Titusville-Melbourne metro region’s principle member.

According to discoveries by archeological research, Melbourne City is believed to have been originally occupied by the Paleo Indians. This was just a little while before the Pleistocene epoch. Some of the findings that evidence this fact include remains of human bones, alongside tools and weapons made from bones and other ancient materials.

However, present-day Melbourne initially got its first settlers in 1867, just after the Civil War of America. For over one decade, the region remained highly under-developed. In 1877, more settlers trickled in, with three freed black men being among them.

The area was known as Crane Creek at the time, before the name Melbourne was acquired in honor of John Hector Cornthwaite. Hector was a former Melbourne resident, and he was among the city’s founding fathers. He was also the region’s first ever postmaster. The 1880s saw Melbourne record rapid growth, especially after the establishment of a local church and school. In 1885, there were 70 residents in the region.

Towards the onset of the 20^th century, the city of Melbourne got completely destroyed following a tragic fire incident. A new town then came up along the United States’ High Way 1. However, this new town was adversely affected by Jim Crow Laws. The region was characterized by serious racial discrimination and bias against blacks up until late 1960s. In 1969, Eau Gallie and Melbourne cities were amalgamated into one, following a unanimous vote by residents of both towns. Subsequently, Melbourne’s population doubled.

Today, Melbourne is a well-established community featuring tons of modern amenities, historical sites and natural attractions. A signature thing in the city is the array of public parks and open spaces that remain well-maintained, attracting locals and guests alike. Such spaces include the Indian River Lagoon, the Ballard Park, and the Wickham Park, alongside other sites. Tourism is the backbone of Melbourne’s economy. Another major source of income is the flourishing tech-industry in the region. Melbourne is home to two burgeoning business districts, great infrastructure, as well as a thriving education system.
